LATEST NEW YORK TIMES RACING ARTICLE TAKES AIM AT VETS

(Benjamin Norman/New York Times)
The New York Times has published its latest installment in a series of articles on racing.  The latet installment focuses on the abuse of prescription medications and the veterinarians prescribing them.

"Only veterinarians can legally prescribe medicine, yet they often let trainers, who are paid to win races, make medical decisions, including which drugs to use," the article reads. "These veterinarians also have a powerful financial incentive to prescribe drugs: they are both doctor and drugstore, and so the more drugs they prescribe, the more money they make. Selling and administering drugs, in fact, accounts for most of their income."

EVANS’ DISPERSAL WEANLINGS PINHOOKS

Conventional wisdom would suggest that one not purchase weanlings from a dispersal to pinhook the following season as yearlings.  Dispersal horses tend to sell for retail prices for a variety of reasons.

The folks who purchased weanlings from the Estate of Edward P. Evans last November had a tough go of it at the Keeneland sale for the most part.

Twenty-three weanlings foaled in Virginia at Evans’ Spring Hill Farm and sold last November were entered for re-sale in the Keeneland September Sale.  Fourteen of them were listed as sold with nine selling for more than their purchase price.

AUDLEY FILLY SELLS FOR $1.3 MILLION

(Keeneland Photo)
Here is what the Thoroughbred Daily News had to say about Audley’s latest success:

(Edited) Hill ‘n’ Dale’s John Sikura and prominent owner and breeder Bruce Lunsford suffered a tough blow in June when the brilliant Grade I winner Madcap Escapade, whom they ownedin partnership, died of colic.  Mares like that aren’[t easily replaced, but Sikura and Lunsford hope their latest purchase, Monday’s $1.3 million Smart Strike half-sister to Bodemeister, will ultimately help replace the void left in the Hill ‘n’ Dale breeding shed.

Hill ‘n’ Dale’s Donato Lanni outlasted a group of Japanese buyers land the filly from Brookdale Sales, which consigned on behalf of the Liebrecht family’s Virginia-based Audley Farm.
"I went and saw her two months ago in Virginia, and she's come a long way,” said Lanni. “But she's a beauty and is a real classy filly. Bob [Baffert] will train her.”

Foaled on Jan. 17, the filly, hip 45, was produced by GSW & GISP Untouched Talent (Storm Cat), whose stock soared earlier this year when her son Bodemeister won the GI Arkansas Derby for Zayat Stables and Baffert.

Favored in the GI Kentucky Derby, he ran a bang-up second to I’ll Have Another after setting a scorching pace, then ran second again to that foe in the GI Preakness S.

Bodemeister was retired to WinStar in August after being diagnosed with a shoulder injury.
Sikura is plenty familiar with the filly’s family. He bought her dam Untouched Talent in partnership for $500,000 as a juvenile in 2006, and campaigned her to a victory in the GIII Sorrento S. and a second in the GI Del Mar Debutante S.

BAFFERT and SIKURA (Keeneland Photo)
Hill ‘n’ Dale sold her to Audley Farm for $1.2 at the 2007 KEENOV sale in foal to Unbridled Song.  Audley later sold Bodemeister to Zayat at the 2010 KEESEP sale for $260,000.
Audley’s Equine Consultant Dr. Jens von Lepel D.V.M. was on hand to watch the Smart Strike filly sell, and was all smiles in the back ring as Lanni offered his congratulations.

“We are more than pleased,” he said. “It’s amazing. It’s the best reward for my owners and my crew—they did so well. And we really have to thank Joe Seitz from [Brookdale], they did a great job. It’s a dream come true. Bodemeister made us so happy through the spring, and we knew we might have a chance with her if we put her on the market.”

Von Lepel, who has managed the Virginia-based Audley Farm’s horses for the past 15 years, was asked if the filly resembled her famous half-brother.

“Not really,” he said. “I would say she's very athletic and racy, but she's a different type. You can see the dam in her, like Bodemeister, but she's more a Smart Strike, while Bodemeister was more an Empire Maker.”

Untouched Talent has a Tiznow weanling filly on the ground and is back in foal to Unbridled’s Song. There could be more sales fireworks from Audley later in the year: Untouched Talent herself has been entered in the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. However, it remains to be seen if she'll actually go through the ring.

"It's the owners' decision,” said Von Lepel. “It's hard for us. We'll see. She's a wonderful mare; we don't want to lose her.”

Polo players (L-R) Rob Brockett on his horse Pachu, Andy Burgess on Shriva and Major Ben Marshall on Burris practise on the beach ahead of tomorrow's beach polo event on September 10, 2012 in Newquay, England. Several thousand people are expected to watch the Veuve Cliquot sponsored event, now in its sixth year, is being played tomorrow on one of the Cornwall's most popular surfing beaches. Organizers say the aim of the event, which is globally one of only a handful of regular polo matches played on a beach, is to bring polo to a wider audience and to blend the glamour of polo with the raw beauty of Cornwall. VA-BREDS DOMINUS, IN THE ROUGH WIN STAKES

DOMINUS (NYRA Photo)

Virginia-bred Dominus and former Virginia-bred Champion In The Rough both won stakes over the Labor Day weekend.

Dominus, by Smart Strike, out of Cuando by Lord At War (ARG) had never raced on turf, but his pedigree strongly suggested that he'd love the surface. Trainer Todd Pletcher took the hint, tried the lightly-raced four-year-old in Saturday's Grade 2, $250,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga, and Dominus dominated wire to wire.

Owned by George Bolton, Stonestreet Stables and Spendthrift Farm, Dominus was sent off as the 9-5 second choice in his turf debut, and his second start off a nearly year-long layoff. Data Link had the form in the book and ranked as the even-money favorite, but as it turned out, he couldn't reel in the winner.

Dominus had the advantage of being the controlling speed, as well as an eight-pound concession from 122-pound highweight Data Link. Cruising to the front with Julien Leparoux, Dominus got away with comfortable fractions of :24 1/5, :48 3/5 and 1:12 1/5. Guys Reward sat in second, but didn't apply any pressure, and Data Link was perched closer than usual in third.

Turning into the stretch, Dominus found an impressive change of gear to spurt away, and his sudden injection of pace dealt his rivals the lethal blow. Although Data Link was trying his utmost, he couldn't outkick Dominus, who reached the mile split in 1:34 2/5. The favorite inched a bit closer through the final sixteenth, but at no point did Data Link pose a threat to the front runner, who had 1 1/4 lengths to spare in the end.

Dominus completed 1 1/16 miles on the firm Mellon Turf in 1:40 1/5 to earn his second career stakes victory, following last year's Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park. The dark bay ridgling returned $5.70, $2.90 and $2.50.

Dominus was bred by the late Edward P. Evans and now sports a record of  8-4-2-1, $439,329.
IN THE ROUGH (Gulfstream Park)
Former Va-bred champ, In the Rough, narrowly beaten in a pair of turf stakes earlier this season, didn’t have to settle for second best in Saturday’s $62,300 Forever Together Stakes at Delaware Park.

Under Alex Cintron, the five-year-old mare rallied along the rail in the stretch to score by 1 1/4 lengths in the one-mile turf race for fillies and mares. She completed the distance over firm turf in 1:37.58 for her first win since last October. Although 0 for 6 this season prior to Saturday, In the Rough had missed by a head in the Dahlia at Pimlico in April and surrendered the lead in deep stretch to lose by 1 1/4 lengths in the restricted Brookmeade at Colonial Downs in July.

A daughter of Stormy Atlantic trained by Monmouth Park-based Kelly Breen and owned by George and Lori Hall, In the Rough is now 5 for 29 lifetime with earnings of $313, 445.

In the Rough was bred by Lazy Lane Farms.
