NICK'S PICKS - SUNDAY JULY 15TH

ROMANS WINS AMERICAN, FAST EDDIE DETHRONED
Despite his defection of Silver Max, trainer Dale Romans captured the $200,000 American Derby (G3) on Saturday with the brave rail run of Cozzetti.  Shaun Bridgmohan appeared to be stopped twice on the rail but found enough room and horse to head All Stormy.  Virginia Derby nominees Silver Max and Sachem Spirit were both scratches.  Romans now expects to saddle Silver Max and Donegal Racing Stable's Finnegan's Wake in next Saturday's $600,000 Virginia Derby (G2).

The 4th annual hot dog eating contest was finished under "chipmunk" conditions at the Colonial Downs Saturday night.  After exhausting eight links in two minutes, reigning champion "Fast Eddie" Schlottetroffe couldn't complete in the 30 grace period and was dethroned by Austin Hersch of Qdoba's burrito eating lure with nine complete weiners.  Schlottetroffe has a chance to avenge in the chicken wing contest to be held during next Saturday's Virginia Derby.  Game was Eddie's effort in defeat.
