From CLN: Gloucester, Virginia based
trainer/owner Leanne Hester scored her first win of the Colonial Downs summer
race season Thursday night when her 7 year old gelding Deep Regret was
victorious in the third race turf sprint.
Deep Regret, who was making his fourth start of the meet, has
raced eight straight times at Colonial dating back to last year. He won the
first of those eight last June 8th and has not been back to the winner’s circle
until Thursday.
Jockey Alberto Delgado, who captured the evening’s first
race atop Chickadededee, guided Deep Regret to a come from behind three length
win. Sitting mid-pack of the six horse field, Hester’s charge made his move on
frontrunning Makulu Matatu at the top of the stretch. The eventual winner
stormed past the leader in mid-stretch, as did third place contender Our Half,
and that duo finished one-two at the wire. Deep Regret crossed in 1:04.31 and
paid $34.20 to win.
“I breed most of my horses, raise them and train them on my
farm here and race them at Colonial in the summer,” said Hester. “Once in a
while, I’ll enter one at Charles Town but I’m basically a Virginia girl.”
Colonial Downs hosts a nine race card Friday at 7 PM. The
track will celebrate its 15th anniversary on Saturday with a host of 15 cent
specials and an eleven race card at 7 PM.
