DRF: Guam Typhoon made setting a track record for six
furlongs at Colonial Downs look effortless during the $50,000 Chesapeake Stakes
on the Fourth of July.
Sent directly to the front by jockey Daniel Centeno, the six-year-old
Guam Typhoon ($2.60) was hand-ridden to the wire while coasting to a 2
3/4-length victory in track-record time of 1:07.86. The old record of 1:07.97
was set by Immortal Eyes on July 3, 2011.
It was the sixth straight win for Guam Typhoon since January
and his fourth in a row since he was claimed by trainer Jamie Ness on behalf of
Midwest Thoroughbreds for $25,000 in mid-February.
Broad Rule easily was second best, 5 3/4 lengths in front of
Malibu Kid in the four-horse field.
In the co-featured $50,000 Punch Line for Virginia-breds,
the six-year-old mare Staged Affair ($49.80), cutting back to five furlongs
after going 1 1/16 miles in each of her last four starts, came from far back in
the stretch to nip 2-1 co-favored Jake Rattle N Roll in the last jump before
the wire.
Staged Affair, the third winner on the card for jockey Richard
Monterey, was claimed for $20,000 by trainer Phil Schoenthal out of a
third-place finish on June 9.. She ran the five furlongs on turf in 57.20
seconds for only her second win in 11 tries on grass.
