Colonial Downs Cancels Racing on Sunday July 8 Due to Expected Extreme Heat; 15th Anniversary Celebration Rescheduled forSaturday July 14th

(NEW KENT, VA ---- 7/7/12)---- Due to extreme heat that is expected to remain in Virginia through the weekend, Colonial Downs has cancelled its Sunday (July 8) card of thoroughbred horse racing. Races were scheduled to begin at 12:55 PM.
“After conferring with the Virginia Racing Commission and horsemen’s representatives, we felt it was in the best interests of the horses, jockeys, racing fans and employees to cancel our afternoon program on Sunday,” said Colonial Downs Vice-President Jeanna Bouzek.
This season, racing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday has begun at 7 PM when the peak of the afternoon heat has long passed.
All activities related to the track’s 15th anniversary celebration, which was slated for Sunday, have been rescheduled for Saturday July 14th including 15 cent admission and hot dogs, an animal mascot race, salute to past champion jockeys and the annual hot dog eating contest. Post time on Saturday is 7 PM.
