NICK'S PICKS, SUNDAY JUNE 3RD

GOT A HORSE? NO SHORTAGE ON JOCKEY TALENT

Take a look as some of the later races on today's card.  Jockeys that have won riding titles in the past like Fogelsonger, Karamanos, Russell and Luis Garcia line the entry sheet.  If Rosemary Homeister wasn't riding at Arlington Park, you would have returning riding title winners at Colonial all the way back until you got to the days of Mario Pino and Edgar Prado.

Between those names are jockeys that seem to ride a little better when they are at Colonial.  Sarah Rook, Malcolm Franklin and Eric Camacho have proven they are capable of clicking down three wins on a card.  So is Geovanny Garcia who swept the late double on opening day.

Then, as we saw on opening day, you can't sleep on jockeys such as Richard Monterry or Xavier Perez who rewarded their longshot backers by executing their mounts.  Perhaps the schedule change to the four-day weekend has helped capture a talented jockey colony at Colonial Downs.

Perhaps the larger fields on the turf provide more than a tempting opportunity for riders to get mounts.

The recent VHBPA agreement to raise the mount fee schedule is certainly a plus.  If you have a talented horse and want to run at Colonial, you will find a talented rider.  After all, there's only room for 14 in the starting gate.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Being born in a stable does not make one a horse."
