In late March, Thomas and Dawes Lee executed a control burn of the dormant Bermuda in an effort to save grass cutting time and to release nutrients back into the soil.
Looking out over and walking parts of the course Friday morning, it appears the blazing procedure has rewarded horsemen and fans with lush and picturesque turf making it once again “the star” of opening day.

over the last several seasons, the Secretariat Turf Course and its mobile
railing is ready for the large fields of thundering hooves that will trample
over it for the next two months which make Colonial Downs one of America’s most unique racing venues.
It will get tested today perhaps more than any other day of the meet, with five steeplechase races and another three races zipping horizontally over it.
