| NIGHT OFFICER |
Forest Boyce, 7th leading rider at Colonial last year,
scored wins with King’s Coronation in the fourth, Night Officer in the
afternoon’s featured race, a $25,000, 5
½ furlong sprint, and in the day’s finale atop Wild Mocha.
In the feature, Hold On Smokey took an early lead while
Night Officer, looking to break a series of runner-up performances, settled
into third. At the three-eights pole, the eventual winner claimed second and
hooked up with the leader in an exciting stretch battle. Night Officer came on
strong and finished one-half length better than Hold On Smokey in 1:03.26.
Prior to Sunday’s race, the 4 year old Officer colt had
finished second or third in five straight races, of which all but one had been
on turf in the same company. Night Office is trained by Richard Small for
Fitzhugh, LLC.
Karamanos, a four time riding champ at Colonial, is back
after a one year absence from the Virginia summer meet. The 38-year-old
Argentina native scored wins atop Altruistic in the third race and Moral High Ground
in the eighth.
Richard Monterrey connected in both ends of the early daily
double with Whiskey Keg in the first and Lyr in the second. The former earned
his first life win in 14 outings for owner Sam English while the latter earned
his second straight triumph for the Big Lick Farm.
Colonial Downs is dark on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. A
new era of racing at Colonial Downs begins Thursday when an evening race card
goes to post “under the lights” at 7 PM. Night programs will continue every
Thursday, Friday and Saturday thru July 28. Sunday races will still begin at
12:55 PM.
