Now, it looks like Bodemeister has a double burden…The colt
bred by Audley Farm in Berryville is trying to become the first horse since
Apollo back in 1882 to win the Derby without racing as a juvenile and, after
being installed the morning line favorite, just the fourth horse since
Spectacular Bid (1979) to win the race as the post time betting favorite
(should he remain so).

When Fusachi Pegasus won the race as the favorite back in
2000, it had been twenty renewals since the chalk had won the Kentucky
Derby. Since then, Smarty Jones and
Street Sense have earned the roses as the crowd’s pick.
Regarding his limited experience, trainer Bob Baffert told
the Daily Racing Form:
“Bodemeister was just young and immature. I wanted him to
get ready at his own pace. But he had 26 workouts before he ever started. He
has a foundation under him.”
