| CURLINELLO (Tod Marks) |
As a student, the young Brazilian Jose DeCamargo was bitten by
the horse racing bug. As a young man he
went to Europe to lean what he could in the yards of Newmarket and
Longchamp.
In 1982, he made his way to New York to learn about American
racing from Angel Penna Sr. Eventually
he would go out on his own with the support of some Brazilian breeders. Working as a bloodstock agent buying horses
for clients in South America and bringing Southern Hemisphere runners to the
U.S., DeCamargo bought and sold several
stallions that once stood here in the Commonwealth.
His long term goal was to own and operate a farm in central
Kentucky and he achieved that in 1991 when he opened Santa Escolastica , in
Versailles, Ky. There he established a
solid business which led to the winner’s circle for the 2002 Kentucky Oaks when
Farda Amiga won the famous race.
On Wednesday, Jose DeCamargo made history again when he
purchased the stallion prospect (and former Virginia-bred Two-Year-Old
Champion) Curlinello for $90,000. That
sale, at hip number 3606 of the 2011 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale,
marked the end of the Edward P. Evans’ Spring Hill Farm dispersal.
More importantly, it tolled the bell for the end of an era
of Thoroughbred breeding both here in Virginia and nationally.
