Roberts scored in the afternoon’s first race aboard Call Me Sonny, who left from the far outside (post 12). The five-year-old Posse gelding struggled through much of the race but surged over the final hurdle in the straightaway. Sitting tenth at the 1 ½ miles mark, Call Me Sonny passed nine frontrunners to win by nearly two lengths.
Roberts had the outside horse again in the fifth race, but didn’t need any dramatics to capture this one. Sent off at $26.80 to 1, Maximize stayed among the top three through the first 1 ¾ miles, then eased to the front and pulled away from the field in deep stretch.
The nine-year-old Mighty gelding, who won by 12 1/4 lengths for trainer/owner Bay Cockburn, was making his first start since October, 2009.
In the third jump race of the day, Well Fashioned bettered a second place finish at Colonial during the Strawberry Hill races three weeks ago. Jockey Bernard Dalton directed his four-year-old filly to a come from behind victory, crossing four-plus lengths ahead of Brave Prospect.
Colonial Downs will host another trio of hurdle races on Sunday June 26th including the $50,000 Zeke Ferguson Memorial Stakes (Gr. III). The New Kent oval will present the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup this Saturday June 18th.
