For the year so far, wagering has dropped 8.12% despite a 2.33% climb in purses compared with the first five months of last year. There have been 106 less race days, a 5.19% decline, this year compared with last year through May.
Wagering on U.S. races reached $1,163,454,383 a -7.8% from the $1,261,814,872 wagered in May of last year. Purses fell 4.35% from $100,348,921 down to $95,983,896.
Year to date, purses have declined from $5,049,378,245 in 2010 to $4,639,320,277 and total purses from $385,543,277 to $376,779,303 while race days have declined from 2,044 to 1,938.
