PROMINENT BREEDER EDWARD P. EVANS DIES AT 68

Edward P. “Ned” Evans, owner of Spring Hill Farm in Casanova, Va., and owner and breeder of 2009 and 2010 Virginia-bred Horse of the Year Quality Road, died Friday in New York City after a brief illness. He was 68 years old.

Evans died Friday night at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, his personal secretary Catherine Moraetis told the Wall Street Journal on Saturday. Moraetis said the cause of death was acute myeloid leukemia.

Evans bred the 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam and was chosen as the Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association's 2009 Breeder of the Year. He was also recognized by the New York Turf Writers Association in 2002 with the Ogden Phipps Award as Outstanding Breeder, which he shared with the Phipps family. He was the seventh leading owner by North American earnings in 2010, with his horses having earned $3,617,508.

Evans was also the former chairman of Macmillan Publishing, and he recently donated $50 million to Yale University to help fund a new facility at the Yale School of Management.

His father Thomas Mellon Evans owned Buckland Farm, which produced the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Pleasant Colony among others.
