He was born in Crozet, the son of the late O. H. "Hess" Jones and Maude S. Jones. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence H. Jones; and sister, Maxine J. Leake.
Pete is survived by his wife, Phyllis C. Jones of Crozet; a daughter, Robin J. Mellen and her husband, David, of Crozet; a son, Peter L. Jones and his wife, Vicki, of Crozet; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Mellen and Caroline Jones, both of Crozet; two grandsons, Robert Mellen and Alexander Jones of Crozet; two sisters, Martha Ann Shepherd of Crozet and Betty J. Bradshaw of Charlottesville; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Pete was a lifelong member of the White Hall community and a farmer. His great passions in life were his family and his farm. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and his infectious smile was most evident when talking about them. Pete was a very accomplished farmer whether raising cattle and horses or growing a good crop of hay. He was a man of the land and seasons. In partnership with his family, Small Farm bred and raised many outstanding hunters that have competed in all areas of the country.
Pete enjoyed hunting and fishing and as a young man was a dedicated foxhunter. He particularly thrilled to the gobble of the wild turkey and spent many early mornings on Buck's Elbow Mountain with his friend, James Shifflett. He traveled to many areas of the country with friends hunting elk, deer, birds, and waterfowl. Anywhere he traveled he made instant friends that were attracted to his open smile and his quick wit.
Pete will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. His was a long life and well lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad or the Crozet Fire Department.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2011, at Smallwood Farm in Crozet.
