All sorts of things come across the Virginia Thoroughbred Blog’s desk…This comes from Marion Maggiolo of Horse Country Saddlery in Warrenton:“I like statues of bronze, oils on canvas or board, soft watercolors and hand-painted
ceramics. Recently, I was introduced to papier mache.
One Saturday morning, an artist entered Horse Country with eighteen pieces of her work. As she opened one of the boxes and gently lifted a precious creation, she told me how she conceives a figure.
In dreams, I thought. But each piece is an actual happening, viewing or tale. Each one is colorful, animated and elegant, be it a hoot in the hunt field, a satire in the stable or an exemplar of an exhibitor. It takes two weeks from start to finish. She gathers found objects for each idea. Then the figure is hand-sculpted of paper and clay, molded, hand-painted, sanded and sealed with a gloss medium.
Prices range from $175.00 for an animated horse startled by a yellow bucket to $650.00 for the largest piece, multiple horses and hounds. The artist can also do custom work.”
