COLONIAL TURF CUP - Paddy O'Prado, third place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, leads off this decade's first Turf Cup field with a field of seven scheduled for the starting gate at Colonial at 5:19 pm. Does the small field size exclude quality? No.

The inaugural running (2005) had six, including an emerging star named English Channel. This year's Turf Cup includes two Kentucky Derby starters, Dean Kitten is the other. American Turf winner Doubles Partner and Arlington Classic winner Workin For Hops are also in the race.

The All Along features the first two finishers in last year's Virginia Oaks -Blind Date and Shared Account-proving that an older race will return younger horses. In the next economic upturn, how about an initiative for an older turf race with a modest purse to try to lure Battle of Hastings back? Even Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra raced for $250,000 this weekend.
