With his win aboard Citigambler in the third race at Charles Town Nov. 14, jockey Travis Dunkelberger equaled the North American record for consecutive wins by a jockey with nine. The record was established by Albert Adams in 1930 and equaled in 1993 by Anthony Black.Dunkelberger’s effort to hold the record outright fell short in Race 7 when his mount, Warm Springs Girl, finished second as the odds-on favorite.
Prior to the seventh race, the Charles Town-based Dunkelberger had reeled off nine consecutive wins at both Charles Town and Laurel, with his last defeat coming in Laurel’s fifth race Nov. 11.
Having missed a substantial part of 2009 due to injury, Dunkelberger had only recently made his return to action. His biggest win after returning from injury was aboard Russell Road in the $500,000 West Virginia Breeders’ Classic.
Travis Dunkelberger's nine consecutive winning mounts:
Nov 11 Laurel Race 6 Trophy Collector
Nov. 11 Charles Town Race 1 Imanheiress
Nov. 11 Charles Town Race 7 Covert Action
Nov. 11 Charles Town Race 10 Mr. Synfuel

I saw Bobby Frankel several times around the racetrack but only had a chance to talk to him once. On the weekend of Funny Cide's attempt to win the Triple Crown, I was fortunate enought to be hanging on the rail where Steve Haskin and Frankel were speaking. I introduced myself to him and he spoke about as modestly as he could about Empire Maker's chances to thwart the Triple Crown. He spoke about as eloquently as one could about trainer Barclay Tagg, basically how he hated to be the trainer of the colt that was about to ruin the Triple Crown attempt of such a nice trainer. He had nothing but confidence in his chances to win. In a driving rainstorm I took about 50% of my wagering bankroll for the weekend and put it on Empire Maker with favorable results. In the years since, everytime I saw him on TV or at the track, I thought of that Friday morning. I wish I would had spoke to about about Ghostzapper.
