WOLFENDALE WINS FIRST RACE

Glenn Craven is a self-proclaimed small-town newspaper editor from Henderson, N.C. with nearly two decades in the journalism business. A longtime fan of horse racing and self-taught student of Thoroughbred pedigrees.

On March 30, 2009, he became a co-breeder for the first time when his mare, Bushes Victory (Spartan Victory-Below Broad Street, by Kokand) delivered a chestnut filly by Mighty Forum(GB).

Yep, that’s the same Mighty Forum (GB) (pcitured) who once stood here in Virginia and is still picking up a check for the occasional Stallion Award.

He wrote a nice post on his blog, Fugue for Tinhorns about trainer Maggie Wolfendale winning her first race on Friday night at Colonial Downs.

Wofendale is still in college and the daughter of trainer Howard Wolfendale.

Thanks for taking note of the blog.

Now that I have a foal on the ground, I plan to join the VTA and will be visiting Colonial again soon. It's a great place to see the races, and a big part of why I wanted to start out in the horse business with Virginia-breds.

Hopefully the need for more OTBs, namely in Northern Virginia, will finally be recognized, and racing can continue to be upgraded at Colonial Downs.

I also believe that for Virginia to truly succeed in the thoroughbred business, something drastic needs to happen to promote resident stallions. At present, the economics of standing a stallion in Virginia are entirely unrealistic, and the number of stallions has declined by two-thirds in less than two decades.
