VIRGINIA MEDIA COVERAGE OF CUP LIMITED

We all know newspapers are having a tough time holding their market share in the face of a soft economy and intense competition from the Internet.

Horse racing seems to be getting lost in the shuffle. The Richmond Times-Dispatch, which seems to be Colonial Downs’ home newspaper, did cover the race, but the photo shot by Dean Hoffmeyer that was published with the stroy was “short a nose” as you can see. We’re gonna blame that on some editor and not the photographer.

There was no coverage in the Washington Post, the Virginian Pilot or the Roanoke Times – three major newspapers.

Lack of coverage by the Virginia Pilot does not surprise me. They never run a positive story on horse racing and they probably have the worse group of "sports writers" that I have ever read in any newspaper.

Can't fault Dean Hoffmeyer for the photo... He's an excellent photographer, but cost cutting has decimated the staff. I'm sure that picture was cropped (badly) by some inexperienced picture editor.
