Wayne and Susie Chatfield-Taylor’s Morgan’s Ford Farm in Front Royal own and bred the first Virginia-bred winner at the 2009 Colonial Downs meet. (Click on chart for better view.)Coral Cave, a five-year old by Lion Cavern, out of Coral Reef by Dumaani, won the $16,000 claiming race by a half-length paying $20.40 to win to her backers. Trained by Kathleen O’Connell and ridden by James Lopez, she collared the field around the turn and held on gamely to hold off a charging Gaffney’s Grits.
The win was worth $14,616.
Two other Virginia-breds won Friday earning a 100% bonus – Mt. Weather ($24,500) won the fifth and Alpine Getaway ($9,976) won the seventh.
