BOOK SIGNING

On Thursday evening, Nov 1, the Galloping Grape will be hosting a book signing and wine tasting with author and ABC Person of the Week Marianne Du Toit. Du Toit is promoting her travel/adventure book, titled Crying with Cockroaches- Argentina to New York with Two Horses. Marianne's route took her through various parts of Virginia including both Warrenton and Middleburg.

Crying with Cockroaches tells the story of an undertaking against the odds: a journey considered by many to be a little on the crazy side. Yet, South African born Marianne Du Toit was determined to follow her dream – adamant that with only two horses for company, she should explore the Americas, travelling solo from Argentina to New York City over 21 months, finishing in March 2004.

Limited equestrian experience, hardly any contacts and an unknown continent, she persevered. Despite it being a journey of heartbreak, frustration, bureaucracy, loneliness, danger, and hunger, nothing stopped her from following her heart.

But this is not only a story of struggle and pain. It is also one of great joy and personal rewards. From peasants to high society, Marianne experienced the true human spirit of generosity. Her adventures had a powerful message – you can overcome the impossible if you are determined and positive. Humour and a 'taking everyday as it comes' attitude helped a great deal too.
Her book will be available from the Ingram Book Company, can be ordered from any bookshop and also from http://www.amazon.com/.

For more information contact the Galloping Grape (Kim Pinello) 540-428-1002, gallopinggrape@gmail.com or the VTA 540-347-4313, VTA@vabred.org.

CAREER CHANGE

Looks like Virginia-bred stakes winner Run The Light is headed for a career change. As stakes winner in 2006 at Colonial Downs for his breeder Edward P. Evans, Run The Light has been sold to well known steeplechase owner Kinross Farm. Kinross's connections, Zohar and Lisa Ben-Dov along with their trainer Neil Morris, are no strangers to the winner's circle at jump races all up and down the east coast.

Run the Light, who won the $60,000 Daniel G. Van Clief Stakes and over $190,000 at traditional flat racetracks, entered the jump race world with a bang albeit on the flat. He won the $5,000 Old Dominion Dash for Virginia-bred/sired horses at Morven Park. Run The Light, by Tobasco Cat, out of Green Light by Sheikh Albadou, won by six lengths over his stablemate Hey Doctor. He covered the approximate 6.5 furlongs in 1:20.

A week later, Run The Light came back to win the $20,000 Old Dominion Turf
Championship at Great Meadow. The six-year-old gelding earned $12,000 for his efforts.

Look for him over jumps next spring...

TELEPHONE WAGERING

Telephone wagering in Virginia is booming. This year $30 million will be wagered through various licensed Advanced Deposit Wagering (ADW) companies such as TVG, Xpress Bet, Twin Spires and Colonial Downs' EZ Horseplay.

This month Colonial is offering a $50 free match if you open a new EZ Horseplay account. Just in time for this weekend's Breeders Cup. In addition, the VTA receives a small percentage of each wager from the Colonial platform for reinvestment in the industry.

A quick word about YouBet -- If you have an account with YouBet you should consider moving it to EZ Horseplay. YouBet does not have a license to conduct ADW in Virginia, so their accounts are illegal. They refuse to get a license the way TVG, Xpress Bet, etc all have. Subsequently, NO PURSE DOLLARS are coming out of YouBet's illegal Virginia wagers. None.

Recently, Colonial Downs and the VHBPA filed suit to stop YouBet from taking wagers in Virginia until they were properly licensed. The company has until sometime in early November to respond to the suit. In addition, the Oregon Racing Commission which regulates YouBet ordered them to stop taking telephone wagers from customers in Washington, DC. At last week's Virginia Racing Commission meeting, it was agreed that the VRC would contact the Oregon commission and encourage them to order YouBet to stop doing business illegally here in the Commonwealth.

Williams Joins TRF Board

Robin Traywick Williams, the former Chairman of the Virginia Racing Commission, has been unanimously elected to the Board of Directors of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the nation’s largest and oldest thoroughbred rescue group.

Williams (pictured here at the 2007 Virginia Derby Gr.III with daughter Katie) will join the TRF Board along with Dave Johnson, the renowned announcer and the long-time “Voice of the Triple Crown” for ABC Sports. The election of Johnson and Williams is consistent with the TRF's policy of seeking out well known figures in the industry who are known for their enthusiasm and dedication and share in the organization's belief that all retired race horses are deserving of a dignified retirement.

Williams has worked as a newspaper reporter and columnist in her native Virginia and is the author of the acclaimed book, "Chivalry, Thy Name is Bubba."

In 1994, she was named commissioner of the Virginia Racing Commission by then Governor George Allen and served in that position until 2003. In 1999, she was honored by the Association of Racing Commissioners International with the Joan S. Pew Award, which recognizes racing regulators who have served with distinction.

“This is such an honor," Williams said. "I love the racing industry, and I’m excited to have an opportunity to work with such an interesting group of people on a project of such importance to the racing industry. My husband is in the scrap metal recycling business, and he is always talking about “design for recycling.” I think the racing industry needs to adopt that attitude as well. We have to be thinking about what to do with the horses throughout their entire life cycle."
"I’ve been impressed with the TRF board members and staff as we have worked together to organize the inmate training project at James River Correctional Center, and I’m hopeful that my service on the TRF board will help this program as well as the other prison programs around the country. We’ve had tremendous enthusiasm here in Richmond for the local program, and I’m hoping to contribute some of that energy to the national organization," said Williams.

JAMES RIVER TRF OPEN HOUSE

Come See Our Horses! Open HouseFriday, November 9, 2007 - 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon -Barn 4 - James River Work Center (enter JRWC off Route 6 and follow directions).

You can help us celebrate “Greener Pastures”a new partnership between the Virginia Department of Corrections and the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. You will see offenders working directly with retired racehorses to gain horse management skills -- it's a program that gives everyone a Second Chance.

Please .S.V.P. by November 5th -- StateFarmHorses@aol.com (names required for security purposes) Questions? Call Heather Mitchell at James River Work Centerat 804-784-3551, ext. 2311 or email us at StateFarmHorses@aol.com.

“Animal therapy” has proven to be valuable with many groups - the elderly, the handicapped and the incarcerated, among others. In less than two months, officials are already seeing a change in attitude among the six inmates chosen to participate in the inaugural group at JRWC. They are gaining confidence, personal skills and determination for managing their lives when they return to society.

Dozens of local TRF volunteers have helped organize the program and raise more than $35,000 to pay for the renovations to the barn, the professional horse management curriculum and the day-to-day upkeep of the horses. This is not only a heartwarming story, but a good example of a public-private partnership that generates great benefits for society.

BIT O' VIRGINIA

The $500,000 QEII Stakes at Keeneland was won by a Kentucky-bred with Virginia roots. Joyce Young and Gerald McManis' Bit O' Whimsy won the race over Dreaming Of Anna.

Both Young and McManis are Virginians. It was Young's first win in Kentucky, McManis' first Grade I and only the second victory ever at Keeneland for trainer Barclay Tagg.

Young, from Manassas, is the sister of George Rowand. McManis is a family freind from Wintergreen.

Bit O'Whimsy was bred by Young and her mother Joyce Bonner Rowand, and she comes from the family that put the Rowand family on the breeding and racing map. Bit O'Whimsy is out of Kriti B, who is out of Highland Mills.

Highland Mills was purchased as a weanling for a Rowand-based partnership managed by George. Well known Virginia bloodstock agent Tyson Gilpin oversaw the purchase. Highland Mills did little to distinguish herself at the races, but in the breeding shed she got the Rowands and their trainer, Barclay Tagg, rolling along.

Highland Mills would produce Grade I winners Miss Josh and Royal Mountain Inn and the Grade III winners Highland Crystal and Highland Springs.

RACING DOCUMENTARY SEEKS SUPPORT

In a recent email from filmaker John Hennigan:

"A buoyant and energizing film experience that may just be the best documentary of the year . . . THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY may not be the most publicized documentary of the year but, like HOOP DREAMS in 1994, once it finds its audience it will be a swift ride to the winner's circle."

This was written a few days ago by an international movie reviewer named Howard Schumann who had just seen the documentary "The First Saturday In May" at the Vancouver International Film Festival. We started off with this quote because it directly relates to the reason for our e-mail. Our film needs your help to continue building an audience. Word of mouth can make or break an independent film. We have made tremendous strides in the last 5 months via our grassroots marketing campaign and successful runs at several summer film fests including Tribeca, AFI SilverDocs and Vancouver. We need to continue this momentum, however, by continuing to build our core audience. This will insure the distribution of the DVD this summer for we can prove we can directly connect with our audience.

"What can I do to help?" is a question everyones kindly asks. PLEASE HAVE YOUR FRIENDS/RACETRACKERS/HORSE AND ANIMAL LOVERS GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND REGISTER . http://www.thefirstsaturdayinmay.com/

If you are involved with a group or club that would connect with our subject matter or you are a member of the media, please pass it to the appropriate parties. Registering is extremely important for us and takes only 30 seconds.

OPRAH WINFREY TO FEATURE OPRAH WINNEY

Oprah Winfrey will pay tribute to her (almost) equine namesake next Tuesday, October 23, when The Oprah Winfrey Show runs a segment on the top filly sprinter Oprah Winney.

The segment is expected to include footage from Oprah Winney's victory earlier this year in the Barbara Fritchie Handicap at Laurel Park as well as scenes from last year's Breeders' Cup World Championships. The fleet Rick Dutrow trainee is scheduled to make her next start in the inaugural running of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on October 26 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. (ESPN2, 4:00-6:00 p.m., ET)

The Oprah Winfrey Show has remained the number one talk show for 21 consecutive seasons, winning every sweep since its debut in 1986. Produced in Chicago by Harpo Productions, Inc., the program is syndicated to 212 domestic markets by King World and to 134 countries by CBS Paramount International Television.

BIT OF WHIMSY WINS QEII

(From the Thoroughbred Times)
For much of the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (gr. I), there seemed to be no denying classy champion Dreaming of Anna, who was seeking her fourth consecutive stakes victory.

But after a ground-saving trip from Javier Castellano, Bit of Whimsy (seen here in the paddock at Colonial Downs) made a late rally along the rail, angled three-wide and caught the 2006 Juvenile Fillies Eclipse Award winner in the final 16th to win by 2 1/4 lengths on Keeneland’s Haggin turf course Oct. 13.

Bred in Kentucky by Virginians Bonner Young and Joyce Rowand, Bit of Whimsy had won her only graded stakes in the June 2 Sands Point Stakes (gr. III). The following month the 3-year-old Distorted Humor filly was beaten soundly by Dreaming of Anna at Colonial Downs. She was second in her most recent start, the Sept. 8 Garden City Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont.

This time, trainer Barclay Tagg instructed Castellano to lay off the pace even more, knowing that Dreaming of Anna would have the lead to herself. After a speedy three-quarters in 1:11.24, Castellano revved up Bit of Whimsy for a late run from seventh position. She was third at the top of the lane but gaining ground.

The final time for 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.73.

Now with three wins in six career starts, Bit of Whimsy, out of El Prado mare Kristi B, has earned more than $400,000.

HARNESS RACING 101

Here's what we know about harness racing -- almost nothing. But we do know this, they don't use the paddock. The horses and sulkies come to the track ready to race from the receiving barn. If this looks likes the paddock at Colonial Downs, it is! Subsequently, Colonials Downs is utilizing the space for patrons...a paddock party.

"Every Saturday in October will feature Paddock Parties, which take place trackside in the thoroughbred “walking ring” paddock area. The parties feature live music, in-paddock betting windows, an outdoor barbecue and plenty of umbrella tables to enjoy the races. "

Well, it is a nice spot!

THE FIX?

LONDON - Six-time champion jockey Kieren Fallon went on trial Monday on charges of conspiring to fix races in Britain.

Fallon and five other defendants are accused of conspiracy to defraud customers who used the online betting exchange Betfair. They allegedly interfered with the 17 races from December 2002 to September 2004.

Fallon rode in all 17 races, winning five.

The horses did not always lose as they were meant to - but when they did, it allowed a syndicate run by businessman Miles Rodgers to make money on the online betting exchange Betfair, the jury was told Monday.

The defendants, including jockeys Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams, deny being part of a race-fixing scam.

Fallon, 42, formerly of Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, but now of Tipperary, Ireland, Fergal Lynch, 29, of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, and Darren Williams, 29, of Leyburn, North Yorkshire, also denied the charges.

In July 2006, Fallon was banned from racing in Britain until the completion of the trial. He has raced in Ireland, Australia and France since being charged.

On Sunday, Fallon rode Dylan Thomas (above) to victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
